"2007 announced as 'great' in the Rhône" -- Jancis Robinson

by Bob Ross » Mon Oct 08, 2007 11:31 am

Under the heading ‘Favourable summer weather conditions unveil
a 2007 vintage of excellent quality’ those that speak for the Rhône Valley boldly announce:

A combination of exceptional weather conditions and the care and attention of the growers, makes 2007 an exceptional vintage. The first signs of phenolic ripeness announced at the start of the harvest have now been confirmed. The 2007 vintage will be truly great! [Gosh. Early days for such confidence but let’s see…They’ve certainly got quotes from some reputable sources below. JR]

According to the growers, it is extremely rare to have such a calm and trouble-free vintage.

Early days indeed, but may be true -- if so, there should be some great bargains available soon.

The rest of the report appears on Free for All at

Bob - your title is a bit misleading. Jancis did not declare it a great vintage. In fact she merely reported a number of vintage reports from producers/officials in the Rhone. It's also instructive to see her statement in brackets ahead of those reports: [Gosh. Early days for such confidence but let’s see…They’ve certainly got quotes from some reputable sources below. JR].

Your complaint, David, should be addressed to the author; here's what Jancis calls her article on the Free For All page:

"2007 announced as 'great' in the Rhône (in: free for all)
Oct 8, 2007
Polish those superlatives... although in Châteauneuf they seem slightly less pumped up."

It's also her title on the article itself.

And, in her defense, the title makes it clear she isn't doing the announcing (at least to this reader), but that others are doing so.

Bob - her article (I read it) is much clearer than your title.

Although while we're on the subject, I did a trial subscription to the Purple Pages, and I have to say that it's nothng worth paying for. It's no better than the irregular and uneven information on the eBob pay site. I'm goign to cancel before the full, paid subscription kicks in.

David, with respect, it's her title, not mine -- I only quoted it.

The value of the site is two fold for me: online access to OCW3 and some really topflight discussions -- VS and David Schildknecht in particular. She's planning to put Wine Atlas 6 up as well.

It's also sometimes helpful to get her and her staff's views on one of my research projects. And as a early day subscriber, I suppose habit comes into it.

Your mileage will vary of course.

I do love reading David's stuff as well, but his contributions are so irregular as to make it a very sketchy investment.

As for VS - well he and I never got along anyway, so...
