WTN 1998 Martinelli Zinfandel; 2004 Duckhorn Merlot

Two other wines made available at last night's party

1998 Martinelli Zinfandel. Different than other California Zinfandel! Quite light and lean almost thin, even. This is definitely not a fruit bomb, but there was still some nice zinberry fruit. Noticeable acidity-this is a food wine, I think. Very intriguing-thank's to Bo for the opportunity to taste this! 3*+ for intrigue alone

2004 Duckhorn Merlot (basic bottling). I like Duckhorn, but this needs some time in the cellar. Still...nice smooth black and red berry fruit, well-balanced oak (not a massive hit of vanilla), not a particularly thick wine in mouthfeel. Good acidity for food! Odd bitter note (tannins?) on the finish that I'm not sure I liked, but am not sure I disliked. 3* with upside potential?

Hm. The only two Martinelli Zins in my spreadsheet are from the '93 vintage. I liked them.

They're right there on River Road. I need to stop by some time.

Your report seems to fit the '98 RRV vintage in general.
