WTN: Alto Adige PG, Swiss Petite Arvine, Tokaji

2004 La Cadalora Vallagarina Pinot Grigio Gazzi (Vallagarina IGT, Südtirol/Alto Adige, Trentino-Alto Adige, northeastern Italy) 13% – appears pale yellow, quite clear, smell lovely soft grapefruit, light stone, bit of sweetness, vibrant and alive, mouthfeel bit thicker but with great flow, taste quite dry but full-flavored, quite an edge to it, powerful stuff, I thought it would work best with salty food, but I enjoyed it most on its own, a powerful solid wine, the bare sweetness on the nose was nowhere on the palate, dry but incredibly solid, good stuff.

2006 Cave des Places (Laurent Hug) Valais Petite Arvine (Valais AOC, Switzerland) 12.9% – appears medium yellow gold, smell quite aromatic, wonderful peach kerosene, soft yet lively, bit of paint can, fascinating nose, taste faintest hint of background fizz, soft texture, full and interesting flavor, lovely, intense, floral, herbal, presence of fruit, very different wine for me, made a strong statement, absolutely adored the texture, so rounded and so full-bodied, I can’t really pin down the flavor components but in many ways this reminded me of a dry Muscat—with hints of sweetness but faint and just bursting with dry flavor, but I adored the wine, good find at 19 Swiss francs

2000 Oremus Tokaji Aszú 3 Puttonyos (Tokaji, Hegyalja, Hungary) 12.5% – appears deep gold, super reflective, viscous, smell strong fresh peaches, sweet, as it opens up a bit more spice and vodka-like elements, mouthfeel viscous, free flowing, very nice, taste rich deep and structured honey, wonderful deep savory spices, wonderful lurking fruit, somewhat tangy finish, long, slow and warm, significant depth to this wine with unusual flavors floating in and out, I quite liked it, a splurge at 89 Zlotych (24 euro) for 500 ml

Unfortunately, Swiss francs are almost the only currency that will buy you a bottle of petite arvine - meaning, fine Valais wines are often impossible to find outside Switzerland. The Swiss drink a lot more wine than they produce...

Les Cretes, in the Val d'Aosta, makes a very good Petite Arvine. So you can buy it in Euros too.

Interesting . . . do petite arvines from there get exported at all? To be honest, I had never even heard of petite arvine before a visit to Switzerland, but I'd love to be able to continue exploring the grape.

Petite Arvine can make great white wines which deserve to be better known. However, I guess that the Swiss will do what they can to prevent that and keep the small production to themselves at reasonable prices.
