WTN: '98 Chateau de Sales

by Carl Eppig » Mon Oct 01, 2007 10:41 am

1998 Chateau de Sales, Pomerol ($26 U.S.). This is what might be called a journeyman Pomerol if that is not an oxymoron. Decanted right before dinner with a decanting funnel and caught a lot of sediment, none of which got into the wine.

It showed some black currents and other fading fruit on the nose and upfront. There were lovely layers of earthy complexity accompanied by muted tannin across the palate, and a delightfully lingering finish. It would not have lasted very much longer. Like a lovely lady appearing and then disappearing into the fog.

We matched it with filet steak in rasher seasoned with EVOO and Morton rub, and charcoal grilled with oak chips. Steak was accompanied by roasted baby Yukons, and sliced Brandywine tomatoes.

Happy, happy Sunday evening.

I tend to really like de Sales in ripe vintages like '98, and regret purchases in less ripe vintages. Thanks for notes, I also liked this wine.

It was very nice, but we could tell that it was at or just below its peak. Thanks for inquiring O.W.
