Screwcap Watch Update! The Miami Edition

by Hoke » Sat Sep 22, 2007 8:49 pm

Cruising the shelves in the Ft. Lauderdale, Coral Gables, Palm Beach and Miami areas this past week, I spotted:

Rosa Bianco Pinot Grigio
Shenandoah Zin
Sobon Zin, various iterations
Fat Ladies SB, South Africa
Badger Mountain (still the superbly ugly label though)
Reserve St. Martin Pays d'Oc
True Earth Organic
Tusk 'n' Red Mendocino
Blue Nun Riesling!
Fortant de France
Pierre Sparr
Arrogant Frog
Dubouef Cotes-du-Rhone
Sidewise Pinot Noir (French: isn't that too cute and ironic for words?)
Folonari Pink PG
Banfi Le Rime
Dog Tail California
Marcelina

For those who aren't aware, I usually don't post on NZ and Aussie wines as a rule, because they are so numerous this list would go on forever---however, when I do notice a shift from cork to cap, I'll unhesitatingly point that out.

It's a whole different landscape down here, these days. Sure, there are numerous (red wine) makers who seem content to stick with cork - and some highly respected names among them - but it's game over for whites, and an intriguing mix for the reds. Perhaps in a nod to the less-well-informed, there are still quite a number of base/entry-level reds under cork, but screwcaps are well represented right the way up the price scale, including the $100+ mark: Penfolds 04 RWT, Henschke's 04 Edelstone, Wolf Blass Platinum label, Cullen, Moss Wood, Giaconda. Add things like Wynns John Riddoch, Clonakilla's Shiraz-Viognier, Brokenwood Graveyard and so forth, and you find the aristocracy of Australian wine is indeed gradually changing over.

And if any foreign makers do offer a choice of closure to their importers world-wide, it's pretty well guaranteed that Australia will take a screwcap. It's just a pity our overall market is so small, or we might be able to swing a few more!
Guess we'll have to rely on the flying winemakers to spread the word...
cheers,
Graeme
