Hmm. A first sweet wine for me. I approached this with both interest and trepidation as I'm not normally fond of sweet alcohol. It was recommended to me in my local wine shop as a great entry point for dessert wine.

The wine gives off quite an astonishingly pungent smell of grapes. So powerful, in fact, that I suspect it would out-smell pure grape juice. There's a big dollop of apple in there too, and perhaps a little peach/apricot.
On the palate the immediate flavour is sweet and hot, although there's easily enough acid there to carry the sugar and alcohol. It takes a little while for the fruit to come through, and when it does the flavour for the most part follows the scent although there's quite clear notes of melon added to the mix. The wine is unsurprisingly full bodied and a little thick and sticky in the mouth. Finish is fairly short, sweet and grapey.

One thing I was very surprised about with this is that the sweetness didn't become cloying as I drained the glass. I even found the residual sweetness in Gewurztraminer got to me in the end, so there must be very good balance in here. Still I'm not convinced sweet wines are the thing for me - I prefer a refreshing, acidic white.
