WTN: 2004 Salomon Undhof Wieden Tradition Grüner Veltliner
12% alc. Brilliantly clear, deep straw colour with greenish-gold glints and a lot of youthful pétillance. Plenty of crisp green-apple fruit with every swirl, coupled with a bit of quince and some pineappley esters. Powerfully crisp and acidic on the entry with some more prickly carbonation and an utterly bone-dry texture - exactly the way I like all my whites. Intensely nervy, palate-cleansing acidity; plenty of no-nonsense structural firmness. Minerally on the mid-palate with excellent purity and gorgeous dryness. I wish that more of our Eastern North American whites were made in such a style and not in that wimpy, slightly off-dry mould that is so pervasive. Some white-pepper spice here on the mid-palate, though it's in the background; what I get is plenty of zesty grapefruit rind on the mid-palate, just as the finish begins. The finish is short, but this is nevertheless an excellent food wine and palate cleanser.
Grüner Veltliner is one of my favourite white vinifera grapes. There is something so amazingly Austrian and fantastically Central European about it. Although my quintessential match with Grüner is breaded Wiener Schnitzel with veggies and shredded cabbage, I had this one with a pork tenderloin roast and it was excellent.
