SacBee: NevadaCnty Wines....

by TomHill » Wed Sep 12, 2007 11:51 am

Mike Dunne, one of my most favorite of wine writers, has a terrific article in today's SacBee on the wines of NevadaCnty. It's an area that, like HumboltCnty, has the potential to grow/make some very special wines I think. I just got last week the tableau of Naggiar wines and just ordered the Avangardia wines to try. Mike beat me to the punch here.

Tom, I couldn't agree more! Mostly I drink European wines, liking them better and also finding the pricing better. But my cousin who lived in Nevada City sent me two red blends from the area a while back - both were wonderful. I was terrifically impressed.

That reminds me - I have an Indian Springs Cab Franc from Nevada County sitting in the basement right now...

Tom, the wines were an Estate-Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 from Smith and Rough and Ready Red 2000 from Nevada City Winery. My notes show liking the Rough and Ready Red quite a lot,as it had crisp acidity and soft tannins with lots of concentrated blackberry fruit. (Even my neighbors were impressed, as I recall.) My cousin sent the two wines - she wasn't a wine person at all, so I am assuming these were both fairly table wine blends.
cheers, Bonnie
