WTN: Chat-en-Oeuf 2005

A blend of old vine Grenache and Syrah, the wine is a marketing gimmick, referencing on the back label the "much more expensive" Chateauneuf du Pape. The label bears an image of a cat sitting on an egg, hence the name.

Fairly flat and unexciting, some cherry fruit and spice, red licorice, moderate weight, harsh, bitter and a little hot toward the end. Pretty much totally devoid of flavour and character. I wasn't expecting much, but it would have been nice to have had something from this wine. I have have had many wines from the Coteaux Du Ventoux in the past, and I know the region is capable of producing some charming, fruity and easy drinking wines. This was not one of them.

Purchased at $13.15 (Canadian).

But you never know until you try. Lemme tell ya'! I "specialize" in locating $10.00 and under wines. Most give me an instant headache without even being through the second glass. But who knows!? Although the laws of probability and marketing are against it, I just might find a star performer some day. (What do they say about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?)

That's my attitude as well. Most of the time I come out on the losing end but, as you say, once in a while I get a "Wow" wine.
