2004 Amon Ra Shiraz by Ben Glaetzer
I've been a big fan of Godophin for a couple of years now, but there's a new kid n town! Generally Aussie shiraz has too much of raw pepper sprinkled onto your tongue flavor especially on the back end that wipes out everything you were hoping to enjoy about your wine. Amon Ra has a rich, deep, layered core of currants paired with paprika and nutmeg on the back end to make a terrific combination. Restrained tannins make this hard to resist now. I don't know if it is in the sourcing of grapes or later magic by the winemaker, or both, but it really has a powerful yet elegant and very rich texture and palate. Since, I've come across notes stating the authors feel the '05 is better than '04. Hard to believe but I guess I'll have to learn the hard way! Not decanted, enjoyed with churrascarria red meat fare in Tampa. Decadent!
