WNT: 2005 Dom. du Vissoux Fleurie Poncie

by Kyrstyn Kralovec » Fri Sep 07, 2007 7:07 am

I picked this up after reading one of Jim's alluring notes on it, and was not dissappointed.

Beautifully bright and transparent, the color leaned towards violet/magenta and casts glints of fire.

The aroma was of baked cherry pie backed up w/ fresh berries.

Wonderfully balanced, the acidity was of tart cherries that rolled nicely around my mouth and finished up really plush on the back, with a warm and satisfying aftertaste. Later I noticed some cinnamon toast on the nose.

I drank this along with roast chicken and a simple vegetable salad of greens, tomatoes and peppers w/ balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil, and I was completely surprised and tickled to find that it went even better with the salad than the chicken. In fact, it brought out the freshness in the veggies so well that I'm going to finish it tonight with the same meal.

Thanks Jim...this might be my new favorite wine for a while, I hope the store where I bought it has some left (they opened their last case for me when I bought the single bottle about a month ago).

WWJD (what would Jim drink?)
Karen, I find my palate quite in synch with Jim's, and often try wines he writes up. He's MY points guy, and if you liked the Poncie, then try some of his other reccos as well. You'll drink better than most, and for less money, too.

Thanks for the tip, John. I have tried one other wine based on Jim's notes, an Arbois Puppilin, which was quite interesting but not necessarily my cup of tea. I still have two bottles left and plan to revisit sometime soon to see if it was the wine or my palate or the tasting environment.

Btw, my first name is Kyrstyn  I just use a "K" because the spelling is so weird that I figured it's easier for everyone (and forget about the pronunciation...a lot of my "real life" friends just call me "K" too!

I'm thinking that's a good policy.

Nice notes K. I have enjoyed some Domaine du Vissoux Beaujolais Cru in the past including the Fleurie Les Garants but have not had the Poncie. Florida Jim spends some of his year in western North Carolina. Maybe we can meet for an offline sometime in the future.
