A friend is trying to decide whether to buy his allotment of Harlan at $450 per bottle....

He can always send the extra bottle to me if he doesn't like it.

My only (limited) experience is with 05 Pinots (nice) and Chardonnays (not so nice, imo)

When in doubt - don't.

Harlan/Screagle/etc. have gone beyond the bounds of reason.

But while I have no idea of general vintage conditions Steve Tanzer did like the wine a lot.

Are not all Napa vintages near identical?

Not even close. Some years Harlan is a 100 point wine. Other years it's only a 98 point wine & hardly worth bothering with.

Seriously though there have been a lot of "cooler" years in Napa lately.

How they must bitch about 'cooler' vintages in Napa. Sigh...

Actually they must - the pointy people do not buy in cooler vintages. RP tells them not to.

I hear you, David, and I'm in your boat, but this was a serious inquiry--this friend can afford whatever he likes, and he happens to like Harlan quite a bit--I implied no judgement by mentioning it, just hoped to get any extra info available, like your Tanzer comment--thanks.

Wine is such a matter of taste. It's just too bad that GOOD TASTE cannot be purchased at any price!
