WTN: La Vieille Cure (Fronsac) 2000

by Matt Richman » Tue Sep 04, 2007 11:57 pm

Nice tobacco with smokey sweet currant and a broad herbal base. Tangy tannins and high toned acid. Not a lot of depth or power. A pleasant, easy to drink, somewhat soft Bordeaux.

I bought this recently for $29, but I wouldn't buy again at that price.

This is one of these cult wines here.

It is an inexpensive wine that I believe that RP scored very highly one time, but there has been considerable vintage variation.

Can't say that I found it a wow the times I've had it. Had the 2000 last in December 06 and wrote OK claret ... but seems very austere surrounded here by new world wines.

Matt,

I've not had the 2000, but have had the 2003 on many occasions. At low $20s, I think the 2003 represents a fine QPR.

Cost Plus had the 2003 for low 20s, so I picked up one. Thanks for the note!

The area I live in does not appreciate Bordeaux, and the wines are literally absent our market place. The one exception beyond the ubiquitous Larose Trintaudon and Greysac, for reasons not obvious to me, is Vielle Cure, which last time I looked was priced at $37. I quite liked the 00 upon release at around $20 (I lived in So Cal at the time), but it's not worth twice that.

Your local BevMo (if you have a BevMo) doesn't carry Bordeaux, Jenise? Heck, even the one in pickup truck Vacaville does!

I have a lone bottle of this, planning on waiting a bit more.

Have some 2003 waiting in CA for weather cooling.

thanks for notes

I thought the 1998 was very good. Haven't popped any of my 2000s yet, but maybe it is time to try one. I love the guy on the cross. I spent some time chasing down who the crucified person was, then forgot. :) He might have been the patron saint of the hamlet, or something like that.

One of Sherry-Lehmann's Unsung Heroes in '03 or '04 was the 2000 Chateau l'Argenteyre, a Medoc appellation. I bought a couple and happened to open one over the weekend. (I like to drink Unsung Heroes on my lake deck in the setting sun after strenuous mountain hikes, where good Bordeaux would not get a decent showing, because of the wind and sun. Had to walk into the house because the l'Argenteyre was such a pleasant surprise. Cedar, asphalt, earth, minerals - like the smells from our hike.

I think the wine has since gained cru bourgeois status. Napa Cabs.com has it; I know because I just ordered another case from them.
