WTN: 2004 La Casaccia Grignolino

by Dale Williams » Tue Sep 04, 2007 9:27 am

Sunday night Betsy made a puttanesca sauce. Not first thing I think of for al fresco dining on maybe the most gorgeous day/evening of the summer, but it was delicious. I wanted a light chillable red, and went for the 2004 La Casaccia "Casa Poggeto" Grignolino del Monferrato. I quite like Grignolino in general (though I've only had a few), but this was the best yet. Beautfully floral nose, light with vibrant acidity. Pretty bright strawberry and raspberry fruit, a sense of earth. This is a great $10 bottle of wine, I've ordered more. Fresh and refreshing. About a third of a bottle was left, both people who tried it Monday at Labor Day party said "hey, this is cool!" B++

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Sounds good. I was going to buy that from Chambers while I was in Nyc but I never got around to it. Sounds like I should have.

Hi Dale,

I love that wine, too. It does the same sort of things Pineau d'Aunis does, but I think better. (I like my PdA pink.)

If you're still in CA occasionally you can buy it from my retailers, too. Delicious stuff, their Barbera is also very good. (I would say that, of course, I have it in inventory...)
