WTN: Bodegas Numanthia Termes 2005

Full purple fruit with a sweet vanilla coating and lots of dark tobacco. Not as big or sweet as the 2004, but pretty big and sweet nonetheless. Has some tacky lingering tannins and a long sticky finish. Very focused core. A lot of wine for the price, and to my palate not out of balance. An excellent buy. I am a fan of Spanish wine.

Matt - what were the tannins like on this? My first (and only) Numanthia was a 2002 that I tasted about six months ago, and it was without a doubt the biggest, chewiest wine I've ever had.

I don't recall the sweetness you mention, although you could tell that there was a lot of big fruit lurking behind the tannins.

Anyway, this had been a wedding gift from a client, and had I known how much structure it had, I would have definitely cellared it for another 5 years at least.

The one I had was not the Numanthia, but the Termes. Boy their wine names are confusing.

The tannins were perfectly manageable, unlike what I keep hearing about the Numanthia.

I'm not sure, Matt. I'm no expert on Spanish wines by any stretch, but anytime I've seen Numanthia mentioned, Termes is always in the name too. For some reason I think they're one in the same.

Anyone out there who can clarify for us?

Maybe Victor can clarify, but my impression is Bodegas Numanthia makes 3 cuvees (in increasing price):
Termes
Numanthia
Termanthia

Yes Dale, that's right. The one I had was the first/cheapest, the Termes. I assumed what K is talking about is Numanthia. I've seen something called Baby Numanthia on CellarTracker, but I don't know what that is.
