WTN: Baron Phillippe De Rothschild Carmenere Reserva 2005

Valle De Rapel.

Dark purple in the glass.

Smoky and earthy on the nose.

The wine has a great mouthfeel. Thick and weighty, smooth, soft and plump, dark chocolate, black cherries, iodine, with a bit of a bitter streak. With time, the bitterness intensified and also became quite peppery.

A sweet, chocolate finish.

Purchased at $14.95 (Canadian).

I believe this wine will benefit from some short-term cellaring.

One of the owners of DeVines here in town has just returned from a week in Chile. He is raving about the newer style wines but found the "library" wines too oaky. It was a tour put on by the Chilean wine honchos so interesting comments. Guess we will see more wines from here on the shelves?
Your Carmenere sounds like a nice tipple Bruce.

Bob:

The theme for yesterday's (Aug. 18) Vintages release was Chile, so I will have a few more to post on: a Chardonnay-Viognier blend and a Syrah.
