WTN: 1999 Chehalem Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyard

1999 Chehalem Pinot Noir Ridgecrest Vineyard (Willamette Valley)
This wine was very enjoyable when young. Maybe a little bit oaky but that did not really bother me. This was the first time I had tried this wine in 5 years. There have been many changes in this wine. The color is still vibrant. Aromas of black fruits, earth, Oregon and oak. At first taste, I realized I had the wine a little too cold. Been drinking a fair amount of pinots that favor the cold so I needed to give this some time. Well it needed air anyway. Flowery fruits and light tannins on the palate. There was a dill element through the middle that may be from the oak. A question not a statement. As the evening went on, I just felt like it was not opening up, so I corked about 1/3 of the bottle and stuck it in the fridge. The next day the wine had really changed. More focused on purity. No oak or dill elements. Ripe and forward but still a lot of grace. Very nice and alive and well. Should have probably waited another 2 or 3 years. 89+ pts

I don't have my inventory here at my desk, but I have a Chehalem 99 single vineyard whose name I can't instantly recall which I have put my hands around the neck of, and then let go of, many times because I keep thinking of the gorgeous 92 we opened about a year ago. Your note encourages me to stay on that path--quit reaching!

Not sure what you have...from 99 there is the Ridgecrest, the Stoller, and the Rion (which I think is 100% Ridgecest) I think the Rion is now called Reserve. Something like that.

Great vintage and great wine making ... if you had a 92 a year ago and it was still singing ... that is quite a testament.

Jason: Any suggestions as to when I should drink the 04? I have one in my cellar.

I haven't tried, and don't own the 04. I have enjoyed many 04s from Oregon that are made in a similar style. I would think it is drinking well now but could benefit from some air. Honestly I actually think I enjoyed the 99 in its youth more than I did right now but it seemed like in a few years it would go to the next level. I don't thing the 04s will have as long as life as the 99s. My guess would be to drink before the end of the year, or wait 3-5 more years.

I am too long winded today  I guess I should say I don't know :D

Best!

Beer, marionberries, gold ... That was one of those "lazy" descriptors. It smelled like Ribbon Ridge pinot
