WTN: 1999 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Riesling Kabinett Trocken

by Ian Fitzsimmons » Wed Aug 15, 2007 8:51 pm

  • 1999 Müller-Catoir Mußbacher Eselshaut Riesling Kabinett Trocken - Germany, Pfalz (8/15/2007)
Pale straw color, mellow aroma of tart lemon curd with a hint of apple pie. Flavors the same, texture is smooth with fully integrated acidity, much evolved from two years ago, when the acidity was (good but) rougher. A lovely tipple. I am struck again by the similarity between the flavor profile of reasonably mature dry riesling and reasonably mature premier cru Chablis, albeit the riesling is a bit richer/sweeter (the apple pie note).

Good to see that others have older Rieslings in the cellar!

That's old?

Some time soon I will have to uncork a 1990 (or a 1985). It's been too long.

As for the kabinett trocken, I frequently find a similarity between Chablis & dry Riesling.

Ian, substitute the words "Cote D'Or white Burgundy" for "Chablis" and your TN would come close to describing the lovely but less acidic kabinett level 1998 Georg Breur Montosa Charta Rheingau Riesling we drank tonight with veal tongue. The biggest difference between these older trocken beauties and their Chablis/Burg counterparts is price. Three and a half years ago, when my wine was more than five years old, it retailed at $11.70.

Not everyone buys these wines by the palate-load, David!

Thanks, Clint. I'm just getting a toe-hold on dry Rieslings with a few years on them and like what I'm finding so far, from the Pfalz to the Barossa. The oldest has been a '97 Wolf Auslese (Ungeheuer, I think) that we had about a year ago. Such an interesting grape.

Exactly, I have some `96 and `98 vintages. All the `80s are gone!
