WTN: Weil Kiedrich (sic!) Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese '04

by Saina » Tue Aug 14, 2007 6:34 pm

It has been a while since I opened one of these. They are horribly expensive over here, but I have an opportunity to buy a few more, so I decided to drink a bottle over a few days to see if I should get more. I should. Are Weil's wines so horribly expensive elsewhere?

Weingut Robert Weil Kiedrich (sic!) Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2004 8% abv c.35€

Why don't they put the -er after Kiedrich? Watery with a slight green tint - looks very, very young. The nose is quite full of passionfruit and seems more tropical than my last taste of it yet has a note of quinine also. There is some sulphur showing, but nothing unusual for young Riesling. The palate is slightly sweet, and has a great purity of Rieslingness and - for my tastes - a lovable, slightly tart feel to the acidity. I remembered the acidity to be high but not at all tart in previous tastes.

We have a magnificent thunderstorm, so I took a glass of this outside to my balcony to watch it. I rarely drink wine without food, but Spätlesen I drink a glass or two without with pleasure. The lightning was entertainment enough for the wine.

$50/bottle in the USA. Pretty much at the top end with Donnhoff Hermannshohle.

Hello Otto!

It costs even more here in Norway. 36 euros in Alko, and 45 euros in Norway! And David, in Norway we have the Grosses Gewächs at the same price.

Too much money for a category that is not Weil's strength. I get my Rheingau dry wines from Leitz.

Poor Norway. It sounds like Finland for once has a pretty standard price. Too much still. But I've been a greedy boy and finished it off tonight - I tried to save a drop for tomorrow evening, but no chance. It is a charming wine tonight with some charred Coregonus albula. I've been eating so much fish recently, that I might change my diet tomorrow.
