It has been a while since I opened one of these. They are horribly expensive over here, but I have an opportunity to buy a few more, so I decided to drink a bottle over a few days to see if I should get more. I should. Are Weil's wines so horribly expensive elsewhere?
Weingut Robert Weil Kiedrich (sic!) Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2004 8% abv c.35€
Why don't they put the -er after Kiedrich? Watery with a slight green tint - looks very, very young. The nose is quite full of passionfruit and seems more tropical than my last taste of it yet has a note of quinine also. There is some sulphur showing, but nothing unusual for young Riesling. The palate is slightly sweet, and has a great purity of Rieslingness and - for my tastes - a lovable, slightly tart feel to the acidity. I remembered the acidity to be high but not at all tart in previous tastes.
We have a magnificent thunderstorm, so I took a glass of this outside to my balcony to watch it. I rarely drink wine without food, but Spätlesen I drink a glass or two without with pleasure. The lightning was entertainment enough for the wine.
-O-
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
