WTN: Feld Stone Sangiovese '00

Really delicious! Distinctively Sangiovese, yet without the bright cherry acidity it might have had a few years ago. The dustiness of maturity, the smoothness of tannin and acidity brought to resolution, a length that exceeds expectaitons. Dark color, muted cherry aroma. I really, really like wines that have enough time on them!

Mostly Mendocino County, some Alexander Valley grapes. The Alexander Valley was the first harvest of a new planting on the Staten family (owners') estate.

Bought at the winery, which is on the Alexander Valley side of the hill separating the Alexander Valley and Calistoga. I paid $18 at the winery in February 2004.

Thanks for the note, John. Maybe part of my "problem" with California Sangiovese is I've been drinking them too young (I dislike the almost "cherry candy" character I've experienced).

Keep an eye out for Robert Pepi Sangiovese, too. Mr. Pepi used Brunello clones, I understand, and the 2004 was already dark and quite intriguing.

I've had the Pepi Sangiovese, and I like it. Pepi wines in general are good values, though I've never had one that knocked my socks off.
