Sur lie Muscadet offers

by Jim Vandegriff » Thu Aug 09, 2007 5:41 am

Normally I focus on the German wine end of things, but a few years ago I was introduced to Domaine de la Pépière 'Vieilles Vignes' Clos des Briords Muscadet which I found (with 6 or 7 years of age) was stunningly good especially for drinking with shellfish. Garagiste, a wine supplier I like, is offering a 2006 Muscadet which is unfamiliar to me, a Domaine David Muscadet Sevre et Maine (sur lie) “Clos du Ferre”. K&L wines just offered their 2006 import of the Clos des Briords. I'd appreciate any thoughts on these two wines (and would love to read your thoughts on Muscadet as well.) Thanks, jim

Haven't had the 2006 wines (though I will now be buying Clos des Briords blind if that means anything)

I'm another recent convert to Muscadet. It fills my need for inexpensive dry white wine of character. Decent German trockens have gone over $20-$25, so other than some lower end Gruner Veltliner I just buy Muscadet. Always, always, always refreshing, and no worse than neutral with food (usually much better).

The '06 Briords is very good, Jim. It isn't as stunning as the '05 and more along the line of the '04. Here are my notes below.

20March, 2007
Real Wine Attack: Boston. Dressner Tasting at Avila
Pepiere: Msr Ollivier was pouring 05 Pepiere, 05 Eden, and 06 Briords (barrel sample). I’ve had lots of both of the ‘05s but that didn’t stop me from drinking with Marc. Both are solid wines. The Briords was similar to the ’04, without the heft of ’05. Great essence of granite, great balance. Marc explained the pains of the 2006 harvest, having to spend so much time in grape selection to avoid rot. No sign of anything but yumminess.

I am with David, but all here know my affection for the Musky! Just because I am on a Chardonnay mission right now does not mean my tastes have changed. One day I listen to Brahms, the next Dread Zeppilin!@!!$%#%^%^

Welcome to Club Muscadet, Jim. You will find many fans here, and Domaine de la Pépière is one that is mentioned quite frequently. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the Domaine David wine. I'm afraid you have the assignment to try it and report back to the rest of us.

I don't think I have ever tried a Muscadet that was more than 3 years old. I have a 2004 Pépière Cuvee Eden and a 2005 Pépière Clos des Briords that I could consider holding for a few years. Maybe I should pick up a few more of that 2005 Briords for aging. Decisions, decisions ...
