WTN: 1996 Cain Five Bordeaux Blend

by Brian K Miller » Mon Aug 06, 2007 1:51 pm

At the 5-year Anniversary Party at Back Room Wines (Thanks, Dan! Great Napa Valley wine store and a good website). The highlight was this one:

1996 Cain Five Bordeaux Blend (from a jeraboam (sp??)). Proof positive that good things come from those who wait. Nice dark color. Oak fully absorbed and restrained. Lovely nose of herbs and leather and tobacco. This was reflected in the palette as well, with some nice blackberry/currant/raspberry fruit still in place. Not a Napa Fruit Bomb (c) at all-a very elegant and delicious wine.

I agree, nice wine. My note from 2004 (from 750 ml!)
knew one friend loved Cain 5, so first up was the 1996 Cain 5 (Napa Valley). Cassis and black plum, cedary oak
with a hint of tobacco. Not a huge wine, fine tannins already mostly integrated, I'm actually surprised how much I enjoy. Very nice showing. A-

I liked a 2000 vintage that I tried at a Cal Cabernet Sauvignon barrel tasting and purchased a bottle which I haven't opened yet. I think it's generally one of the better meritage or Bordeaux-type blends from California.
