If that is the case why are various species of animals becoming extinct at such a rapid and alarming rate?

Just because animals evolve in a symbiotic relationship with their environment does not mean they will all thrive under all conditions.
There's a pretty good chance that humans will one day go extinct as well (although I hope I'm not here to see evidence of this approaching dynamic), despite our supposed un-natural prowess over the environment. But there's nothing un-natural about the process, it's life. Stuff grows and dies.
Note that I'm not an apologist for pollution and environmental decay under the justification of an always-changing world. I think we should take self-conscious steps to preserve certain parts of our environment. But not because pollution is somehow 'un-natural'. That makes no sense. Things are always being created and destroyed. That is natural. We should preserve our environment to the extent that it's in our best interest and can make the collective decision to alter our behavior.
