Given this month's theme, I thought it would be fun to ressurect this thread too.

I voted once a month, which would be the closest for me. By my count, I had Port - vintage, tawny, or something else - ten times in 2010.

Roy, I wonder if you set a record for longest time between posts in the same thread?

I didn't notice this was a revived thread until I'd voted. I said once a week, since I usually open a couple bottles a month and keep them going for a week or so. I like to have a small glass or two with Stilton after dinner (usually in front of the idiot box).

I too have the age-related problems - I love my VPs 40 years old (even 50 for Taylor), but luckily I bought quite a few cases when I started collecting in the early '80s, so I've now it a nice supply of 70s to drink, with he 77s, 83s and 85s, plus assorted single-quintas from '82, '84, '86 and '87 waiting in the wings. I stopped buying VP with the 90 and 91s (and not too many of those), since I'm now 62, I'm even worried about the '90s and '91s being ready in my lifetime.

I love 20-year-old Tawnies, or even older, but they're pretty expensive now, at least here in Ontario. It's hard to justify $70 for a 20-year-old Taylor when I've got '77 Warre's in the cellar that I spent $16 on.

I opened five Ports in 2010 - four tawny and one ruby. No VP (bad economy!).

A few postings have indicated that "Ports" will be just fine long after they are open. I hope nobody takes that to heart as a generalization and hangs onto, say, an open bottle of 1970 Fonseca Vintage Port for a month expecting a good tipple. Tawnies and Colheitas will keep open quite a while -- "months" I recently heard Fonseca/Taylor staffers say about Coheitas -- but VPs are best drunk up the first day, although personally I have no quarrel with drinking very young ones for a couple of days more. As for LBVs and other types, I don't open enough to have the foggiest notion how long they will keep.

Roy is an infinitely better source of advice on this sort of thing than I am but I figured somebody better chime in before WLDG readers start ruining their ancient VPs.

Oh for gosh sakes! Fooled me, too! I didn't realize this was an ancient thread. For a few minutes it seemed like old times, with Roy and Bucko dueling.

I drank some great ports over the holiday. Why don't I drink them more often? This is an undervalued and overlooked category.

Roy, thanks for bringing this thread back!

I apparently voted before (monthly? quarterly?).
I like Port but alcohol keeps me from opening more - just dinner parties. And even then I prefer 375s.

At this point I barely drink Port once a year. I like the stuff but never buy it for home. My wife drinks so little that it's already more than enough to have one bottle of wine.

I suppose I could buy some when entertaining, but even that doesn't happen very often.

Come to think of it, I don't think I had any Port in 2010. And in 2009 the only Port I had may have been a delightful bottle from the 70s, around the end of the year holidays. Which made me want to drink more. But I still haven't done it!

I am ashamed to whisper that I am a Port hoarder, as I always buy more than I drink. Mainly LBV but am now interested in 10 yr old Colheita etc.
As I have excess, I tend to give away to pals/volunteer buddies who assist me in the various projects I am connected with.

I answered Once a Month and maybe a little more often - not vintage post but something easy to drink like Wiskers Blake or something. I do like to give vintage port as gifts - as a matter of fact I recently gave a Warre 1977 to a guy who did some nice favors for me. I though it was his birth year but it turns out he was born in '76 - oh well, I think '77 is a better year anyway.
