Probably a bit late to this thread, but wanted to chip in that I find it somewhat strange how quickly the age issue with Bordeaux dissappeared from this thread. While it may be very true that mid-level Bordeaux of the sort discussed here are QPR-competitive with Rhone, Rioja, Chianti et. al., it typically takes 24-36 months beyond release date for even modest Bordeux to show their true value. This is much less true of many (but not all) other regions, and that is a HUGE factor. Much of the potential US market for these wines is urban, and in many (most?) urban areas real estate is at sufficient premium to preclude significant cellar space.
If this mid-level Bordeaux was released to the marked at sufficient age to see the true quality of thie wines when buying and consuming the same week - as probably >90% of US wine consumption occurs - then IMO the market would respond with the interest required to seek out the QPR winners. As it stands, much of that energy goes to e.g., Rhone, where the wines show much better in a quick-consumption format.
