WTN: `04 Vat 4 Petit Verdot--De Bortoli (SE Aust).

13.5% alc, natural cork, not decanted. Opened 2 hrs, 100% PV, some Hungarian oak here.

Colour. Big inky centre, thin purple rim, watery edges

Nose. Violets, earthy, some mustyness blows off but later on thinking TCA problem here? Black cherry, blackberry, spice w. hint of licorice.

Palate. Initial thought "this is one up on the Pirramimma". Full bodied, "has a velvety feel " thought one taster. Some sweet blueberry, good fruit extract, nice balance with earthy finish. Some may not like the apparent acidity but does not bother me. There could be a problem here as I mentioned, will see tomorrow?
As it aired, I found some licorice, cocoa and hint of ripeness. Good tannic structure here, cost was $16 Cdn.

Marques de Griñon Petit Verdot 1997 Dominio de Valdepusa DO ?% abv c.25€ (from the special selection, years and years ago)

A rather chocolatey nose, some blue flowers, bell pepper and earth. The palate is a bit hollow, yet sweetly fruity and nicely tannic. Long. Take the chocolatey oak out, and it would be a nice little wine. It hasn't aged gracefully. Should have been drunk soon after purchase (4 years ago or so...)

Marques de Griñon Petit Verdot 2002 Dominio de Valdepusa DO 14,5% abv 28,90€ (from the special selection, now.)

The nose upon opening was very interesting. It was floral and earthy and rather reminded me of Malbec but without the meaty aspect. Unfortunately a toasty veneer of oak soon overpowered all the attractive scents. The palate is too thick, too extracted and I fear it will become just as hollow as the 1997 if it is aged any more. Yet the tannins would need age to soften a bit as even with a chunk of red meat they are rather prominent. The wine has its moments, but the whole isn't pleasing. And the price is just preposterous.

Casa de la Ermita Petit Verdot 2001 (Murcia, Jumilla)

A very ripe and big nose with lots of oak yet a pleasant citrussy and floral aspect also. The palate is too full of everything - it is tiring to drink. Interesting stuff, but not really my style.
