Ellen Hawkes, Blood and Wine: The Unauthorized Story of the Gallo Wine Empire. I got it slightly wrong. They left empties out on skid row, and it was Thunderbird, not Night Train.

Thanks for the clarification, Paul.
My understanding, from my limited study of the subject, the wine of choice amongst derelicts is White Port.
I won't go into detail, but it has to do with knowing if you need to go to the hospital or not.
