So JB, when are we going to see some more notes? Or does it take an ESJ wine to bring out this side of you?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

ESJ tends to bring this side of all of us out. I only wish I could have tasted one of Steve's zins, 'cos his Rhones are rockin'.

Hey Julia,

I was just zinking, with this amazin new language you've created on the board, you should form a subzindary movement called "JB's Zin Lover's Discussion Group". I'd join up at a moment's notice - but not for anyzin "Zin".

Talking of Zins, I had the chance to taste the Z-52 at the Calif Wine Show. I have the `04 in the cellar and I thought they were big Zins. Seems not but very tasty and drinking now.

Hi Julia,

It was the third brother, James who brought the chocolate to complete the zinful experience. I think my brother Bob might have supplied the zin, however. So it was joint effort at zin.

We would love to have another MoCool prelude. Hopefully, we will have some equally lovely wines to share with you. Maybe we could have a theme: The Zen of Zin :D .

I saw this note on oenologic:
Edmunds St. John 2001 Zinfandel Peay (Sonoma Coast) – Heavy, dark and concentrated, with briary blackberries (in whole and juice form), good acidity and a spicy, spirituous finish. It’s excellent with food, but a bit heavy by itself.

Isn't this backwards from conventional thinking? Aren't lighter wines considered more food-friendly, while big, heavy wines are stand-alones?

Steve, are your Zins available here in Michigan? WOD is 0ffering 5 very nice Rhone-ish current model reds and whites, but I saw no Zinfandel in the mix.

Just wondering,

Geo,
If you get a line on them, let me in! I've emailed my local wine shop that carries ESJ and they said they can't get it. I've emailed the place in KY where I bought my first bottle and am waiting to hear if they have any left. This is so covert, I feel I need my trench coat to buy ESJ wines.

The Devil Made Me Do It

by SteveEdmunds » Sat Mar 10, 2007 2:27 am

God, or the Universe, or She-Rah, or somebody, tried to tell me, three, four, five, who knows how many times," Edmunds St. John ain't supposed to make Zinfandel. " I kept doing it, anyway, because I'm stubborn, stupid, hard-headed, or left-handed. The last time was the Peay Zin, '01.

More signs from above: sure everybody likes the wine, now, but when I first put it out on the market, at $25.00 (in the fall of '04) nobody bought it. Last year, just to try to get some money out of it, I sold it off cheap. There might still be some kicking around New York.

I wish someone could explain why it is that when my wines finally get to Michigan, everybody's looking for one that isn't available?

Steve,
Because wine people are a really strange lot. Now that you're finally getting some well deserved recognition, they all want to be buddy buddy.
Glad to see your Michigan distributor got their ass in gear. Just make sure you save some wine for your friends in Indianapolis. I haven't spoken to JJ for a few weeks, but hopefully you guys are working on a "spring order" for us locals.

There is a legend that says when Steve was just a tiny lad he was lost in the woods and ran into Pan and Bacchus making wine and he spied out all their secrets. That's the short version. The longer version is buried in one of Hesiod's poems. Steve is pretty old. :D

Julia,
I have to admit two things...

I buy a lot of my wine based on tasting notes.

If you wrote tasting notes on a regular basis, I would be a very poor man.

Very nice note and good to hear from you.
