That would have been like visiting Napa and Sonoma in the 70s/80s!

Ans the Scotch scene has gone up and down since. For instance some distilleries failed and closed (e.g. Ardbeg in 1981 - I still have a bottle from right before they shut) and then reinvented themselves with the renewed interest later on.

The Ardbeg 17 Year Old, last had in 2001, was one of the great drams I’ve had.

As someone who falls into the age range of yuppies (though I am NOT one), we are not over 65.

As yuppie has been applied to more than one age group over the years perhaps if we call them baby boomers it would be more accurate. Today the boomers range from the age of 57 through 72 .

Let’s just agree to disagree in any number of points. :)

I'm still impressed (and encouraged) to hear this. I have generally tried to finish spirits within a year or so, as they tend to change in character with more oxygen exposure and start to go flat once the bottle gets down to the end.

Which brings me to my current conundrum as we prepare for 12 months abroad (in Berlin), and I'm nowhere near finishing all my spirits! I'm also not going to chug them down for the sake of it. Will keep my hopes low for how they show when I return, but maybe not all is lost.

If you are worried, buy a lot of glass marbles and top up the bottles to reduce O2 content.

I've actually had the Old Forester Statesman, and it's quite good if you like the OF style.

I, too, had the OF Statesman and liked it. I like the OF style. Mortlach's Game of Thrones Six Kingdoms 15yo is good, too. I bought one to see what Mortlach can do with a traditional age-declared bottling as opposed to the Rare Old designation. I still don't see how the math works out for their "2.81 times distilled" claim, based on the explanation I cited earlier. If some of the whisky is double distilled, some triple distilled, then they are blended, the majority would have to be triple distilled to get 2.81 for the blend. The explanation seems to say the opposite. How much of the total distillate is retained is probably more important than how many distillations occur, anyway.

After years of very occasional sipping I'm starting to think I like Irish whiskey better than Scotch.

I drink whisky fairly regularly. I favour pretty much anything from Springbank, but I also like Lagavulin and Laphroaig. For the sherry bombs, Aberlour A'bunadh, Glendronach, and when it was still affordable, Macallan 18. Glenlivet 18 and Benromach 10 are two others I enjoy a lot. For Bourbon, I like Buffalo Trace. I also enjoy the whiskies of Nikka from Japan, but with the prices being asked for them now, I'm torn between drinking what I have (mostly now extinct age statement bottling) or selling them.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
