Jumping in just after the end of the month with a Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu, a less familiar neighbor of Muscadet Sévre-et-Maine. A whiff of aromatic fruit and slight sweetness on the palate were mild negatives for me, but it still boasted the crisp acidity and interesting minerality that I expect in a sur lie Muscadet.

Domaine du Haut Bourg 2015 Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu sur Lie ($11.99.)

Bright, transparent straw color with a distinct brassy-green hue, with a scattering of bubbles on the glass. Fresh and inviting honeydew melon scent leads into a brisk flavor profile of juicy, slightly sweet white fruit framed by mouth-watering acidity and a prickly petillance on the tongue, with modest 12% acidity. Subtle mineral flavors, chalk and granite, show off the complexity that comes with sur lie vinification and Muscadet fruit and terroir U.S. importer: Vanguard Wines, Columbus, Ohio. (May 17, 2019)

Last night had a lovely glass of 2017 Joseph Landron Muscadet in a restaurant to finish out the Wine Focus month. Fresh and lively but also fairly rounded and friendly and adaptable to several dishes on the table. Nothing to meditate over, but perfect in the setting.

This is my first 2018 from Muscadet, reputedly an excellent year for the region as well as for the Chenin further upstream. Domaine de l'Écu became famous under its former owner, Guy Bossard, for its cuvées based on different soil types, granite in this case. The new owner, Frédéric Niger van Herck, has maintained these cuvées as well as introducing some new ones, including reds from CabSauv and CabFranc, matured in amphorae.

2018 Domaine de l'Ecu (Guy Bossard) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Granite - France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine (6/6/2019)
This estate's cuvées seem to have distinctive flavour profiles which the former owner would attribute to the soil types indicated on the label. This one was invigorating with medium/light bodied and showed citrus fruit laced with tangy herbs and iodine together with the usual marked minerality, lively acidity and saline backbone. It may morph into something more complex with some age. Good.

Bob, good to see you back. How's the fire situation up there?--I was worried about you.
