:( Trudi doesn't write here, does she? She has good descriptions that actually make sense.

Good guesses, but you missed a few hints. I said I'd send a bottle to the closest guesser. As a student I could not afford Leroy. S-lès-B isn't a bad guess, but no. Remember, I noted a prominent vegetal note which I find typical of this sub-area of Burgundy. You're right though: 2002 is the vintage. Congrats.

So, what appellation, which producer, which vineyard?

I told you I had an inate ability to luck the vintage when I hadn't got a clue on anything else!

OK, I was about to answer a Corton, maybe Faiveley, based on the vegetal notes and tannins, but the strawberry doesn't seem to fit. Nuits? Darker. Strawberry sounds like something lighter. How about a Chalonaise? Faiveley Mercurey, Clos des Myglands.

Not quite, but getting a bit too close for comfort there Dale! ;)

You mention it is tart and typical of the area, so I would guess cote de beaune. Within here perhaps Santenay, Beaune, Savigny-les-Beaune. Could be somthing rarer like a Chassagne-Montrachet, St.Aubin though.

Producers; Matrot, Pousse d'Or, Lafarge?

Well, I just returned home after my Perrin tasting (it`s 9.30 MT) and my Sancerre Rouge is in tatters!!! I am not a big Burgundian expert so waiting for the answer from one of you big-wigs out there!!
Great stuff everyone!!!! Faiveley is from my youthful memories btw.

Would this be Trudi Haagensen?? I used to buy wine from her at my local vinmonopolet. She was the one employer interested in selling good wines, I was the one interested in buying. Later I used to meet her a lot at tastings, but it has been a very long time now since I have seen her.

Yes, that would be her. She writes occasionally on the UK forum, but apparently she got hit by a car a while back and is still recovering from that - maybe that's why you haven't seen her around? I hope she starts participating a bit more over there, as she really knew how to write these 2nd hand TNs! Last I heard, her recovery is going well.

Otto, looks like our prospective winner has cold feet!!!! It`s very quiet this morning, still in shock as my Sancerre was blown to smitherines.

Otto,
not sure how to know who's closest without knowing what wine is?
If a tie I say give to David.

Well, the wine is Faiveley Mercurey Domaine de la Croix Jacquelet 2002. It costs "only" about 16€ here (a bargain for Alko, lol!!), so as it's a tie, I'll try to find out how much shipping costs to US and Australia, and if it's decent, I'll send a bottle to both of you.

And not just Faiveley, but their Mercurey, too. Quite impressive!

Otto,
please don't send a bottle- I could never enjoy a bottle where a student spend more on shipping than on bottle! Instead let's resolve if you visit NY we'll share a bottle (or ten).

Bob & Mark,
others did the work- after Otto's responses, it just needed some luck. The comments re poor students, the herbiness - once it was established it was Burgundy the Cote Chalonaise seemed most affordable -and sometimes they're herby. And Mercurey is the CC I know best, and Faiveley is probably king there- and noted for its backward tannic style. I'm pretty sure I would have guessed a cru Beaujolais if I only had read initial comments.

Otto,

read ditto from me here (about sending the wine!) - Dale should be declared the winner - he (and some before him) did most of the hard yards - I just shifted to another Faiveley vineyard in the Cote Chalonaise!

Thanks for the kind offer, all the same.
Cheers,

David

Dale and David. I wouldn't have made the offer if it was beyond my means. I'm going on Monday to check how much sending a bottle wine costs to your respective places. If it is too much, I'll be honest about it and not send. But at least I'll check. Congrats to both of you for the tied win.

I really need to refine my TNs: the wine wasn't at all Bojoish.

Well, I might go with one more. Having been sorely disappointed with the Lagrange, I opened (by popular demand) another wine which is showing rather well, so I might put that up tomorrow once I have a retaste. Unless someone else has a wine they'd like to blind us with.
