The operative element is "could have." If the Hwangs are interested in changing the direction of the estate then all the overlap in the world won't matter. Having Joliveau spend more time with Pinguet would be less than unlikely to change the Hwangs' minds.

And as for the "risk" in letting absentee landlords get involved in the decision making, they are in fact the owners and are thus entitled to make any decisions that they would like to.

We, the wine geek community, may not like the direction of Huet, but we don't get a vote until after the decisons are made.

That is a nice piece of reductio ad absurdum, David. Of course, owners have a right to do anything legal with their companies, even if it means killing the goose that lays the golden egg. And obviously there is no point in mere consumers like us discussing it.

But apparantly Huet has a much easier time selling sec, so why not make more of it? That's what this whole issue is about.

The golden egg for geeks is not always the golden egg for the broader market.

....... and my concern is that, by going beyond the ideal balance of production between sec, demi-sec and moelleux, there could be a dumbing down in the quality of the sec, which may become as perceptible to the broader market as to geeks. Personally, on matters like this, I trust the judgement of a man of experience and stature like Pinguet rather than that of an absentee landlord, who of course has the last word.

However, as a consumer of 10 bottles of sec for 1 of demi-sec and even less moelleux, I would be happy but surprised if the Hwangs turned out to be right.
