(this is a continuation of my post in the Pre-Jeebus Dinner thread)
Saturday morning arrived and Bob introduced me to his Jura Impressa coffee maker. What an amazing contraption! A freshly brewed cup from whole beans in a minute with the press of a button. I dank a lot of very good coffee over the weekend.
Alan accompanied Bob to pick up Jeanne. The trip included Alan touring Manhattan and by the time they returned, almost everyone had arrived. Julia had been busy giving everyone the grand tour of the home. I took a few short walks outside, seeing deer, chipmunks and a variety of songbirds. Salil, Dale Tom and others were busy cooking, while I was enjoying the company and sampling many wines. Dale gave an elegant toast to Janet and Bob with a lovely 1990 Pommery Champagne Brut "Cuvee Louise" from a magnum (see Paulo's video).
Since I didn't take notes, I'll have to rely on my memory for my wine report. There was only one wine that I had all day that seemed flawed – a white Burgundy, that smelled of nail polish remover. When you have so many great wines at the same time, it's often hard to put them in proper perspective. If I were to have any of these wines by themselves with a good food pairing, it would make a memorable event. I brought 2 cases of wine with me, 2 bottles of store bought and the rest home made. Regarding my home made wines, I brought a variety and hope everyone managed to take a bottle home with them. If I missed anyone, I apologize and perhaps can make up for it the next time we meet. The first two wines listed are the store-bought wines I brought.
2010 Freedom Run Vin Gris – I picked this bottle up at the winery about a week before. It is a Cab Franc/Merlot blend, made from juice drawn off during the saignee method for making reds. This was a decent rosé, bright color with good acidity and a medium finish.
2006 Bernard Machado Pinot Noir – This bottle was gifted to me by the owner of the winery when I visited McMinnville, OR last year. Deep ruby, cherry, with a touch of smokey bacon on the nose and a full, long finish. I liked it a lot, but it was one of probably many excellent wines that may have got lost in the crowd. I thought this might have been a good choice to start off the May Wine Focus theme.
2008 Chidaine Vouvray "Le Bouchet" – from a magnum. I'm a sucker for Vouvray and this did not disappoint – good fruit, good acidity, long, creamy finish.
2010 Commanderie de la Bargemone, Coteau d'Aix en Provence Rose – very pale pink, floral nose and juicy, acidic finish.
1998 Chateau Musar Blanc – This was Julia's contribution, which was decanted for almost 18 hours. Deep gold, complex nose with a slight touch of funk. Very long, full, drying, tannic finish. A very enjoyable and unusual wine. I think if I were to taste this blindfolded, I would have thought it was a red.
2007 M. Redde Sancerre "Les Tuilieres" – I'm not a SB fan, but this I actually found enjoyable and would even consider serving this with a nice roast chicken. Medium straw color, clean nose (none of that cat pee stuff) and long finish.
2005 Fox Run Riesling "Tierce" – a good example of Finger Lakes Riesling – off dry with bracing acidity and medium finish.
1947 Huet Vouvray "Le Haut Lieu" – this was a real treat. Deep gold, generous nose of tree fruit with earthy notes, long, full finish that didn't seem to stop.
So, after sampling the above and many, many other great wines, and eating lots of great chow, my legs were hurting and my eyelids were getting heavy, so about 10PM, I went upstairs and set the alarm on my cell phone for 1 hour. When I came back down I realized that nobody missed me. I was fully refreshed and ready to party-on and I noticed everyone else seemed to have hit the wall. Lots of people were either leaving or heading for bed. So, I looked in the fridge and found an open bottle of 2001 JJ Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese, about 1/4 full. With my nap and fully refreshed palate, this was probably my most enjoyable wine of the day. Wonderful fruit on the nose, off dry with good acid balance. I found it interesting that even though it was an Auslese, it had more acidity and was less sweet than the two Donnhoff Spatleses we had the night before. I sipped this wine for a long time before turning in.
After morning coffee (did I say that I love that machine), cookies and biscotti, Alan and I headed back home. We stopped for an excellent lunch of burgers and wine at the Glenora Winery restaurant on Seneca Lake.
Once again, thanks to Bob for hosting this wonderful event in the home he and Janet built. What started out as the NYC Jeebus became The Bob Ross Jeebus Extraordinare. God bless you Bob.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
