I believe different hybridizers developed their own numbering formulas. From what I understand, Gazin made several crosses, from the same varieties at the same time. Gazin 2 I think is just a different seedling from the same crossing as Gazin 1. Kuhlmann used to make many crosses at the same time and number them based on their location when planting. So, Kuhlmann 188-2 was the 188th seedling planted in row 2 and was named Maréchal Foch, whereas the 194th seedling was later named Léon Millot. Cornell names theirs with NY followed by a long number that starts with the year, so that NY62.0122.01 - was bred in 1962, but named Valvin Muscat in 2006 and NY73.0136.17 was bred in 1973 and later named Noiret, also in 2006.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.
