I'm with you on most of the rant. But c'mon, nothing is that good in infinitesimally small quantities. You can't even taste the stuff! If it's that good, the first sip/thimble will only make me want more. Maybe not a whole bottle, but at least some more!

I guess I'm a convinced sweet toother (who has been known to enjoy immoderate amounts of plain honey, especially during the lean months when fruits don't provide enough tasty goodness).

Yeah, it's you tall skinny guys with the sweettooth that really disgust me! :D There should be consequences, dammit.

Think of it as Japanese drinking sake. With the small cups you're concentrating on the limited quantity. Doesn't stop you from having another thimbleful though, if that's your desire.

And hey, I'm not averse to a sticky...it's just that as life goes on I find it is so much better to have a counterbalance of a savory or a spicy or a peppery or sommat to help...well, to help counter and balance the intensity of the sweetness. And sweetness after meals? I think I'm steadily becoming more Italianate in my approach to that. Which is not a bad thing.

Tried the $15 Eiswein last night. And poured it AFTER a 2002 Ste. Michelle Washington Eiswein (naturally frozen on the vine) something that, say what you will about this winery, they do remarkably well when they get the chance to do it. The Michy blew the Koblenz away. The Koblenz was pale and dilute, and though otherwise nicely balanced it lacked the intensity that Eisweins are normally about. Worth $15? No.

Jenise, you're absolutely right: Ste. Michele has always done a super job with their stickies. The very first double gold I gave to a WA wine in a competition was to an LH Bot Bunch Selected Riesling...and this coming from a guy who prided himself at the time as a German wine advocate. But good was good---and this was good! And by far the great majority of their sweeties hit the mark surprisingly well.

The truly great German Eisweins I've had - what I've tasted from Donnhoff or Spreitzer for example - have a drinkability, lightness and vibrancy where even a glass doesn't feel heavy and the flavours are more about a pure, intense expression of the grape than anything overly botrytised or honeyed. I've had some super-sweet, almost confected Eisweins before where a thimbleful would have felt excessively heavy and sweet, but the likes of a Selbach or Donnhoff Eiswein are in a different league, and certainly not just for sweet-toothers.

Yes, that is my desire!

I often say that the first glass of any wine is just to rinse my mouth. Then I can get down to drinking/tasting.

But for all that, I rarely buy or drink sweet wine. Like you, it just doesn't fit in with my regular dietary habits.

I actually had a really good experience with some cheap Eiswein from Aldi:
