The truth about alcohol is often even worse than the label suggest, for two reasons; firstly, there is 1.0% leeway in either direction (when over 14), and this leeway is often used; secondly, the wines are often picked at even higher sugars than the number suggest, watered back for fermentation and then de-alcoholised. So the fruit flavors and acidity (natural acidity, anyway) are often those of an 18% wine, not a 16% wine.

Storybook Mountain has made some Zinfandel that seemed to me to have old-style balance and restraint, but I'm not sure what the current alcohols are.

The man had chosen well and most were at least interesting, but by far the most spectacular was a single vineyard zin from Fetzer, of all people. Seriously wicked stuff.


Back in the day...the day being about 30 years ago...Fetzer had easy access to a whole lot of single vineyard zins from Mendocino, and had a rep for making a lot of those pretty incredible wines, Jenise.

Then Fetzer started avidly pursuing the volume game, and single vineyard zins became less and less interesting to them; at the same time these vineyards were either beginning to start up their own wineries or to sell the fruit to other buyers, so the great zins began dwindling from Fetzer.

Even up to the late 90s, though, you could still find some of them in the Valley Oaks tasting room. Alas, all gone now. And Valley Oaks got closed, sat empty for years, and has now been sold away.
