Sorry, I'm not buying into any politically-charged analogues regarding wine appreciation.

There does seem to be a major division in the wine world, but I refuse to attach "left" or "right" labels to it.

I will reveal my own bias on the matter by characterizing the one side as the "unsubtle, overly alcoholic, whack-you-over-the-head, over-oaked, fruit bomb" side, and the wines I prefer as "nuanced, subtle, graceful, and complex".

And actually, IMO, both have their place. Sometimes I listen to Bach chamber music. But sometimes I listen to heavy metal rock. Both have their proper context, depending on my mood. So it is with wine.

There is a wide swath of middle ground where some delicious wines reside.

OK, I will come out of the closet and have to agree with Paul. Just trying to have some fun. Actually I do have a significant dislike for the "unsubtle, overly alcoholic, whack-you-over-the-head, over-oaked, fruit bomb" and depending on where you draw the line there are many well known estates making this stuff. Why?? I also think the wines with that type of bend are very difficult to match with food, particularly what we enjoy. I will stick to wine as being part of a meal and seldom drink it by itself. For that I enjoy an ice cube and single malt scotch.

Comparing to politics was just a way to stir up the comments and since I am actually on the left guess I ended up confusing myself.

I hadn't posted for a long time so did not want to enter the room quietly.

Because those of us on the side of more graceful wine are not nearly representative of the entire world of wine lovers. People have different tastes and different interests.

Yeah I have heard this. I use one single cube and it is the temp I am looking for. Maybe I am no better than the high alcohol goopie wine drinker. You get the award for the most subtle jab at my ranting post.

Take that Mr. Scotch Smoothie drinker. I might just pour my jammy, Aussie Shiraz on a snow-cone. :)

That might be the best use for it.

Had a delicious Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer VT last night that was a glorious partner with mildly spicy and very aromatic Indian food. So yes I drank the wine with food. The kicker - it was 14.5% alcohol, and nobody at the table had any idea until we looked at the label on the empty bottle.

Reminds me of the time I asked for Dubonnet on the rocks at Kings Cross station and got one ice cube!

Ageing of Bordeaux?

Some wines are made differently, for sure. But out of the galaxy of wines out there, some will indeed last just as well as those made 40 years ago...

There's plenty of politics in wine, but it has to do with the business rather than the aesthetics. Take it away,
