the link provided by norm is super interesting. looks like in Ontario at least you are just about forced to join the VQA if you want to label your wines at all. however there are some really curious things about the list of protected terms. blanc de noir can't be used unless you belong to the VQA but blanc de blanc is NOT on the list. Prince Edward County is on there but not the counties that Niagara wineries are in. and varietal designations are not on the list. so presumably someone could not belong to the VQA and have a label that read: "our riesling grapes are grown entirely on our property in xxxx county and made at our winery in xxxx (town)" also curious is that the list contains exactly 25 items. is this a super anal reason why blanc de blanc is not there? methode champenois is not there either.

Norm, I'm sorry I mispelled Campobello. While you are at it try to get to Grand Manan as well; no customs problems. They are both drop dead beautiful. And just think, once upon a time we (the U.S.) traded both islands for Eastport, Maine!!! As Maine humorist Tim Sample says, "Go to Eastport, where every year they hold the Empty House Festival."
