As I have only had one wood stove in my life not sure if mine is representative of all of them but there are times in the summer when my stove fills the room with a smoky smell. For what ever reason (change in pressure maybe) air seems to be drawn down the flue and vents out the stove actually creating a stronger smoke smell than when the stove is in use during the winter.

Dan, I will be attending Pinot on the River Sunday event at Rodney Strong Vineyards Concert Green in October. Will you be in attendance that day?

Victorwine - good points.

Covert - thanks for the additional information. We are always interested in comments like yours. We work very hard to put out a consistent, quality wine and constructive feedback is appreciated and acted upon.

Hoke,

Dan noted he works for Rodney Strong in his first post (page 1 of the thread). Always good to have insiders take part.

Just last weekend (Sat, Aug 21) it was Beth's and my turn to host our wine groups monthly tasting. The theme was (you guessed it) oak and wine. With the help of a few friends in preparing for this tasting, the handout went something like this; “From Little Acorns- When you consider that 80% of the wood is wasted when logs are turned into barrel staves one must understand the full measure of the tribute paid by one work of nature (oak) for another (wine).”
After the educational portion of the tasting, (which included a discussion, several sample vials from “The Nose” oak aroma kit, and a series of “doctored-up” oaked wine samples prepared by my friend and fellow home-winemaker, Ray), the commercial wines were presented to the participants. The only thing revealed to the participants was the varietal composition of the wine and they were asked to score the wines and guess if any what oak treatment the wine received. The tasting in my opinion went very well, (this was confirmed by the reaction we got from the participants).

Salute

Thanks, David. Somehow missed that. And thanks, Dan, for joining in.

JC - Not sure about attending Pinot on the River event at Rodney Strong yet. I will if my schedule allows. I will be just returning from a week in Canada touring with 29 other Sonoma County wineries doing media, trade and consumer tastings. Our winemakers are definitely very involved. It's a very fun event. Let's touch base as we get closer to the event. If I am able to make it, it would great to meet.

Hey, Dan: keep those evangelical road shows going strong! Although I've heard there is a narrow valley to the east that makes some wine, Sonoma is still the best of California. 8)
