Lots of anticipation here at Doris Ranch for this Poulsard-based rosé from the Jura.....>
WTN: `09 Domaine Rolet Arbois, Jura.
12% alc, $22 Cdn, good natural cork, opened one hour, think might be blended with Trousseau (Tim?).
Light blood-orange color. Raspberry and rose petals on the nose plus a sense of minerals. There is definately something here that is different?
Initial entry is off-dry, delicate, unripe strawberry. Good finish, great mid-palate, cherry, good acidity. More red-berry fruit as it warms, lots going on here. Not sure what to compare this with but remember that the sparkling version was pretty good too!
Food was slow-roasted pork shoulder prepared by the neighbour!
I asked a good friend over in the UK to describe his Jura experiencs.....>
I know the Rolet brothers' wines but I can't answer your specific question. But Poulsard wines tend to be coral in colour, and, colour being subjective, a darker hue could possibly suggest a touche of Trousseau. Poulsard certainly gives a haunting rose petal nose quite often plus I sometimes get redcurrant or cranberry, but for me cherry is not in there in a pure Poulsard (though again, I've not any recollection of this one).
The palate of some can surprise with an almost hard nuttiness and a cranberry juice dry acidity. It is also true that this domaine is quite keen on wood (though it should not dominate) and very controlled oxidation, not that either of those facts have much relevance (possibly!) for a rosé. Most Poulsards I try tend to be dry.
