David, I notice that you have wines stored in their cardboard cases. So have I. The reason why I raise this is that I am constantly reading in French wine publications that this is bad for the wines' development; the absorption of humidity by the cardboard and consequent drying out of the corks is given as the main reason. Some even go so far as to say that the presence of the cartons in the cellar dries out the atmosphere there and affects the other bottles. This all sounds a bit far fetched to me. I have about 70 cardboard case boxes in my cellar holding empty bottles and have not noticed any impact to my passive cellar. I use a humidifier during summer but for the other 9 months its off.

A humidifier in the summer? I can't keep the humidity low enough in the summer (sometimes gets above 80%).

Your correct. We have had so much rain and snow this winter that I have not needed the humidifier so got confused. I guess that I have not turned the humidifier on for about a year now.
