I'm in two active groups and neither one has a name. I generally refer to them as the "old guy" group and the "young guy" group due to the significantly different age brackets.

But eventually young guys grow into old guys (we hope.)

We used to have a Gang of Eight, of Go8 for short, that used to meet every month for dinner out. It is now a Gang of Six after two moved to Christchurch. Meetings have fallen off a bit lately, everyone seems to be busier now. It is about time we had another Go6 Past It Party (PIP) where we all bring along old wines that are likely to be well outside their drinking window. We have had some stellar wines at PIP's, along with all those that went down the sink after a small taste each.

Guess I am missing the gene that seems to make people apply cute names to their boats, clubs, cars, parts of their bodies.....I barely name my dogs. As long as I only have one, 'the dog' suffices (I get over ruled by women - what else is new - on the dog thing).

Bill,
That is the same name as the group I am in.

Actually, there's a very practical reason for my own motivation: 'the' is singular, and I belong to several groups. It's therefore a useful reference tool when discussing various activites with husband and friends. May I call your attention to the fact that you variously refer to "the Friday lunch group", "the brown bag group" where your wife is a member of the associated non-wine wives group who have named themselves "the Bagettes", "the west coast wine group", "the Commanderie" and so forth? Same thing, don't you think, whether or not the group agrees to name itself?

Some more ideas.

If you're a critical bunch, The wine assassins
If you prefer blind tasting, The brown paper bag wine club
As it's dominated by those 'in the business', Wine sharks

Plus it's easier to write on calendar! I'm in similar situation, and a bonus is it makes it easy to search notes here for the named group (if I want to see if a wine has been served before, or what food I served when I hosted, etc).

Hi,
I'm afraid this doesn't add anything, or help, but when I was at Christchurch Lancaster Gate, we called ourselves COS. Christchurch Oenological Society. Not very clever or original, but we did manage to organise visits to Cos Labory and Cos d'Estournel among other places.
