I agree, but on the other hand, this might be a business opportunity for a struggling winemaker. If joining Century Club became popular, and blend components count, plant 2 rows each of Grapello, Grechetto, Plavina, Negrette, Assyrtiko, etc, make them each 3% of your blend, the candidate drinks one bottle, a bottle of Beaucastel*, and a bottle of a cheap red Bdx that uses all 5, and voila! Halfway there. They could sell out just based on offering 33 grapes!

* Peter's example above is the most egregious, as obviously most CdP don't use all the varieties.

I'll bet that would be a much shorter list. :)

Wouldn't that be the Thackrey Pleiadas? Last time I checked I was around 130 varieties (not using blends--to the extent the label can be relied on). It helps to like Italian wines.

Their rules aren't strict. Someone on the Wine TV site was boasting of his progress by taking components in a blend. So he had a CnDP, checks with Wikipedia that it could contain 13 varieties and ticks off all 13. :)

I'm surprised no one's commented on this, but not only is the guy a cheat, he's a stupid one. IIRC, those 13 grapes divide into two groups of which 8 are red grape varieties and 5 are white.

Jenise - Beaucastel (red) uses all 13, even microscopic amounts of the white grapes.

Phil, that means that birdwatching (and recordkeeping) is a serious hobby for her.
