A '90 Pape Clement last night was living proof of that, as was the aromatically stunning '61 Palmer.

Glad the birthday celebration was a success. I am a fan of Leoville Poyferre and at this point haven't coughed up the additional funds to purchase any Leoville Las Cases but the latter you had sounded lovely.

The Las Cases was indeed lovely. It was at what I would judge to be near its peak - neither "what fine bones that old lady has" nor "Look at those bouncing berries!"
Of course our purpose at the party was to enjoy ourselves, rather than be serious about the wines, though they did offer some meat for discussion - especially the Poyferre. I found at least two and maybe three layers of flavor in the Las Cases. My nephew Bobby liked the assertiveness of the Poyferre. Overall, the wines were sufficiently different, despite being Bordeaux of a similar age and similar terroir, to make it hard for me to say, "This was definitely better".
I've been in that situation before, and it's a wonderful place to be!

A slightly belated Happy Birthday John. If you had not written which milestone it was, I had you pegged you in the mid 40s. :D Regardless, you seemed to have landed in a "wonderful place".
