Bob,

The '01 GH Spat never made it to any stores in the area. How does it compare to the same vintage WS Spat?

I had tasted both on release and from what I remember preferred the GH Spat due to the layers coming through on the GH. As I recall they were both exceptional and I should of bought more of both looking now at the value of the dollar versus the Euro  Hindsight is always 22 20.

The Graacher Himmelreich wines are always more approachable on release than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Time inevitably favors the Sonnenuhr, but the Himmelreich also ages well.

I have some 2004 Prum GH Auslese that I plan to start drinking this year. Historically I have been drinking the GH at 3 to 5 years of age, and the WS at 5 to 10 years. I have always enjoyed both.

I'm glad that kind of aging curve works for you Sam.

I have not started on my 1995s yet.

David,

I have not tasted many aged Rielsings, so I don't have a good basis for comparison. The one older (20+ years) non-TBA Riesling that I tasted, I did not care for. It tasted quite petrol-like. Others raved about it, but it did not suit my taste buds very well. I get much enjoyment from the younger Rieslings thanks to learning to use my decanter. Patience has never been one of my virtues.

That's the key - drink them the way you like them. It's actually maddening to me that I need to wait 10-15 years for a Riesling to get the way I really want it.

You're lucky IMO.

Sam,
I am with you and prefer my Rieslings younger although I have tasted some really great aged Rieslings. Of course I have also tasted an equal amount of unimpressive aged Riesling. I am also not very patient or very good at determining the optimum drinking time but always enjoy them with up to about 10 years of age.

Hi

I would like to have an alternative view on Weins Prum. I think they have produced very good wines the last five years. I am seriously impressed with the gold kapsule and normal auslese from all years, where they in my view combinae drinkability with intensity and nice terroir feeling. Their strenght seems to be less the kabinett and spätlese.

Prices of German Mosel wines will go up. The domestic German market has finally waked up and so are Scandinavia and England. That said, I think they still offer some of the best values in the wine world today, toghether with Loire reds, good Beaujolais producers and most Spanish wines.

Fredrik,

I will defer to you. I have tasted very few Weins Prum products, and I have never even seen their gold capsule offering. I wish that you had better new about the direction of prices for Mosel wines. We were spoiled over here by very low German Riesling prices for a number of years.
