And every time I'd try a Dolcetto, I'd just shake my head in puzzlement. "Beaujolais"??? Not even close to Beaujolais. I don't think I've ever had a Dolcetto that ever brought to mind a Beaujolais. Maybe there are some Dolcetto Novellas out there, but I've not seen them.
Actually, I prefer the Dolcettos from Dogliani to those of Alba/Asti. I'd even give a strong rec for the one Oliver sells...but I don't want to come off as pimping Oliver's wines!! :-)

I don't think people taste the structure of wine nearly enough, and the structure of Dolcetto is more or less the polar opposite of that of Beaujolais.

I told a producer in Dogliani once that people say that in the US, and he looked at me as if I'd insulted his mother. He had never heard the phrase before and was horrified.

You can pimp my wines any time you like, Tom. I'm honored.

Okay, completely non-wine-related, but thanks for the url in your signature line, Joe. I had never even heard of Bo Burnham before following the link . . . but after a few YouTube videos, this kid appears to be one of the most brilliant comedic performers I have seen in years (admittedly I tend to appreciate the writing of comedy much more than its performance). Not only is the writing superb, but his timing and mannerisms are on mark yet so natural.

Maybe you're drinking the wrong beaujolais? My reference was to "good cru Beaujolais". Wines from Brun, Tete, Desvignes, Vissoux et al that can have very intense tannic structure, can be extremely robust in their early life, and benefit from 5-10yrs of aging. I wouldn't compare dolcetto to fruity, sweet supermarket beaujolais, but that isn't really the beaujolais I drink either.

Had my very first Beaujo tonight Did not write down the producer, but did note it was a "Cru" bottling. (I will go back tomorrow to but a bottle! ). I really liked the austere robustness of this wine, it was not "fruity" at all. It reminded me more of a more austere style of Merlot. Deliciouy. It was very, very French. I will be buying some bottles!

I dunno, Jenise, it can make some delightful quaffing wines in Piemonte, Italy. I haven't had much experience with North American examples, so I can't comment on them. But it might be another case where a wine variety shines in one limited geographical region, and doesn't seem to do as well when transplanted elsewhere.

He's from my town. When I hosted a fundraiser last winter, he preformed for the crowd and I nearly died laughing. The kid is going to be huge someday!
