Dave--

I think you and I are at the same stage here. Both very novice, very inexperienced, and very intimidated/overwhelmed/confused by all the wine out there and the people that (seemingly) know everything about it all.

My theory is to just drink wine and think about it--that's it. Good wine, bad wine, cheap wine, expensive wine, "correct" wine, "incorrect" wine, popular and unpopular, I'm drinking as many as I can.

I noticed from your comments that perhaps you feel your choices or preferences at this stage are too modest for the audience you have chosen, but rest assured that if there was any crowd that would not care about your wine choices, it would be this one. They are all very open-minded and seem to understand that not everyone was born with a corkscrew in their hands

In some instances, the goings-on of a place like this may be over our heads a little, but it has been a great learning experience so far. For a great perpsective on wine to help loosen the stiff perceptions of the wine world try Wine Library TV (WLTV). Info on those shows can be found at this forum or through a basic internet search.

In any case, I hope your newfound interest proves to be a worthy one and wish you the happiest drinking!

You're spot on with many of those observations.

Although I'm not new to enjoying and drinking wine I have until these last few years played it fairly save (and modest) in my wine choices.

And whilst budget constraints will mean that my choices will still be in the sub 30 dollar range - I do find I'm getting more interested in the 'the world of wine'

Actually, not at all. A lot of these wine tasting notes, and most of them by our esteemed leader Robin Garr, are for wines that are US$10 - $15. Truth be told, there are tons of very interesting wines for at or under $20. I seem to recall that there was a poll here recently that asked for the average cost of a bottle purchased by members of the forum. Some were quite high, but I think the majority here may buy more bottles that cost less than US $20 than over that.
