Quick update on some new Malbecs in my local store and I feel sure Alej can give us some terrific insights as usual.

Bcrux from Fournier, believe this is a small step down from the wine I posted on. Also found an interesting `03 Urban, a blend of malbec and tempranillo. Same winery, was warned about the tannins! There was also a $60 Malbec from Balbao but name escapes me.

Im not a fan of the Urban line of wines.... way too oaky and unbalanced tannins, IMHO.

The B Crux is a step down from the A Crux, but its still very interesting.

Randy- Great notes- I find myself drinking copious amounts of Salentein lately. Excellent QPR, IMHO.

Thanks Bob! I'm a Cali Cab lover at heart but can't handle the tariff on a "daily" basis. For me, Malbec pretty well fills the gaps

Bob, what is the criteria for the title? You've piqued my interest!

Alej, thanks for the heads up. I heard it was quite tannic from the store owner. There is also a Crios Malbec, should be good eh.

Guess you know Tom C is judging in your area right now.

In an effort to keep this thread alive and bolster my chances for Malbec Hound title, I just polished off another bottle of Salentein. Had to be done

I am a big Malbec fan also. Last night we had a nice mendoza Malbec/Cab 60/40 mix by Finca Finchman. It was the Expressions reserva. I have posted a tasting note on it before. It was a great match with a marinated strip loin that was grilled to a nice medium rare on the barbeque. I love malbecs with steak and mixing it with cabernet sauvignon made it that much better of a match with grilled steak. Even my wife said it was a tasty wine and for to say that it means the wine has to be smooth, quality wine.

Nice to see a fellow Canadian on the malbec trail!! Up/over here in Alberta, this winery has no representation at all. Same with ESJ.
Nice note Tom, I too love a steak with this varietal but have heard that pizza is also a good match.

Tom / Bob -- since Flichman seems to be available in you areas, I suggest you try the Dedicado, its their premium blend (cab based usually). If you can get it, I would love to hear your comments.

Hola Alejandro,

If I can get Dedicado in Ontario, I will definitely give it a try. I don't remember seeing it, but I have not been looking for it either. We get quite a few Nortons (I have a couple of nice Norton Malbec reservas in my cellar) and Catenas. Both these wineries are top notch producers in my opinion.

Alej, I wish I could but Flichman is not currently available in Alberta. I am seeing more Crios wines however, must be a hard working agent hereabouts!

Ok, I just opened my second bottle of Malbec ever, and the first wasn't memorable at all. This, however, has me going YUMM!!!

2005 Navarro Correas, Coleccia Privida. Very fragrant on the nose, deep garnet/ruby red color, tastes of raspberries, cherries, maybe some plum. Long finish, soft and delicious.

I think I'm a malbec fan now!

WTN: Dona Paula Malbec 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jul 27, 2007 7:56 am

Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza.

Almost black in the glass.

Rich, plush nose of milk chocolate and spices.

Thick, rich, black cherry, milk chocolate, very spicy, tangy, cranberry-like fruit.

Tangy finish.

Purchased at $16.95 (Canadian).

A very nice wine, more for the mouthfeel sensations than for the flavours, which were rather subdued, I found.

Yeah, I am wondering about this one too. On the shelf here, I have heard some comments about "too international". Hopefully the reserve will be a better buy. I pray the house style is not a-changing!

I am having a break from the chardonnays and my malbec friend is coming over so I have just this moment cracked the `03 Susana Balbo Malbec.
As Head Hound have to see how this one is shaping up!! Stay tuned.

Hi Bob,

We had a nice malbec last night with grilled burgers. I really like malbecs with BBQ. This was another Finca Flichman, reserva 2005, oak aged. Less than $15 $CAN. Nice deep maroon wine with a fruity nose of plums and dark fruit. Smooth tannins, dark fruits (especially blackberry), and balancing acidity on the midpalate. Medium finish of fruit. Not the most complex wine but nice with burgers.
