I haven't made a deccision but was thinking along the lines of a people's wine Maybe a VdP or CdR? I'll have to see what tomorrow brings.

I have a Lucien Crochet "Le Chene" from Sancerre in the lineup so will probably open that tonight and consume over the weekend.

Something French, but of course. Leaning toward '00 Meo Camuzet Clos Vougeot if it isn't too darn hot, in which case probably an '02 Redde Sancerre Tuilieres.

Bloody Marys? Either that or that magnum of 1790 Lafite that I've been hanging on to.

I'm turning 25 tomorrow so I'm opening a Montecillo GR Selección Especial '82 and Ferreira's VP '82. I couldn't find any moderately priced French wines from this year though they would have been more suitable.

My plans are "unsuitable," too, as I'm planning to go to the Hess Collection Winery Release Party tomorrow night. They will have French-themed appetiizers, I expect. At least some (many?) of their wines have a modicum of Old World/French feeling. :)

I love the place. The art collection alone warrants a visit.

Happy birthday to Otto and to the French Republic. I hope Otto's birth was less violent. I will also be drinking some Spanish wines as I will be attending a Spanish themed dinner.

You mean you are finally out of the 1789 Lafite?

Ehh... I was outbid by Hardy Rodenstock. I gotta talk to that Jefferson guy, though: I hear that he's got quite the collection.

Happy Birthday Otto! Happy Birthday France! Tomorrow I'll be going to a ceremony dedicating a plaque to a young local Marine who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in Iraq. The US Marine Corps Band will be there along with a General and the hero's parents. I may be a bit too choked up to drink anything in celebration, but I may need something later to calm down.

With tonight's dinner of smoked duck, potatoes and cucumber-tomato salad, I opened two J et R wines:

1999 Domaine de la Tourade Gigondas
color: garnet with a hint of bricking
nose: quite gamey, with a good underpinning of cherryish fruit
palate: meaty, gamey, background cherry, minerals, decent structure

1999 Domaine Grand Tinel Chateauneuf-du-Pape
c: more vivid garnet with no signs of bricking
n: kirsch, a hint of gaminess and herbs
p: much fruitier than the Gigondas, medium-bodied, kirsch, decent acidity and a touch of meaty-gamey flavor

The Grand Tinel struck me as a fine, honest CdP that didn't have too many ambitions. Likewise, the Gigondas was the non-oaky version from Tourade and quite rustic. Both were good reflections of the vintage, and it could be argued that '99 favored Gigondas slightly more than CdP. Both wines were quite enjoyable with the food, though Jean and our guest both preferred the CdP for its more evident fruit.

Maybe a bottle of La Grenouille Rouganté "Pink" from Frog's Leap?
And now what?

I am somewhat shocked by Rahsaan's statement, because all the best people *I* know on several contients champion Bordeaux.
We must not know the same people...

I had 2002 Riesling grand cru Kitterlé from Schumberger with moules frites.
The wine was OK, but I was expecting more power, length, and minerality.

Best regards,
Alex R.

For Bastille Day, it would be a 2004 Domaine Laurens (Marcillac). And to continue Steve Edmunds's recitation of the French anthem: Le jour de gloire est arrivee!

Marcillac in Wisconsin. Whudathunk?

It's a rare wine, even in France - although by no means an expensive one.

Even tough we enjoyed aTapas stytle meal with lots of Spanish wines, (none of which I took notes on) the evening ended with a 2001 Sauternes. I hope that satisfies Alex.
