Your wine contest

If you were to arrange a blind tasting of French v. California wines (similar to the Judgment at Paris) which wines of today, would you enter? Since this is fantasy, let's add the top five judges you would choose.

O.K, I'll bite:

2010 Pavie vs 2010 Verite "La muse"
2010 Latour vs 2010 Opus One

2012 Latour Meursault vs 2012 Newton unfiltered Chardonnay
2012 Niellon Chevalier-Montrachet vs 2012 Peter Michael Chardonnay Belle Cote

judges are: Hugh Johnson, Matt Kramer, Janics Robinson, Robert Parker, Pierre Rovani

disclaimer: I have only had 1/2 of these wines!

My choice of judges was based on 2 English critics; 2 American critics; and one French/American critic (Rovani)
Michael Bettane (sp.) might be a good choice also as a French critic. Obviously I have too much time on my hands!

Sorry, I do not know enough about California wines..

One reason the JoP made such an impact was that the judges were French. I think that if JoP had held been in California* with US judges the impact would have been minimal.

So, to do it again you'd need French judges, and I don't know 5 French wine critics

*Like the movie Bottleshock :)

Good points Peter. Think this is a flawed idea.

People get too wedded to what happened in the past, and the idea that it's the only way things can be done with wine.

It's 2016 - think about today. It's OK if you don't know California wines, that's a valid excuse, but there is nothing flawed about the idea. If this idea is flawed then the JofP was a flawed idea as well. Turns out it was not flawed.

As for the specifics, I will have to think about it.

Jim,
I'm still pondering my list. I "think" I have my decided on the judges, just not the wines. You set the bar!

Here ya go...

Sine Qua Non (Syrah) vs. Chave Hermitage
Shafer Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon vs. Chateau Pavie
Ridge Monte Bello vs. Chateau Latour (I think Opus One would get its clock cleaned by Latour)
Ramey Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay vs. Domaine Ramonet Batard-Montrachet
Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Chardonnay vs. Leflaive Batard Monrtachet

I have to think about judges.

I would suggest Tanzer as another US judge. He has never seemed to have an agenda.

I'd go with Tanzer and Schildknecht or Tanzer and Meadows.

I would take Meadows, Tanzer and Schildknecht and drop Johnson. Hugh and Jancis are basically the same tasters and we need to punish the Brits for Brexit. ;)

As for the judges, I was thinking more in the line with, Robin (you’ll get a down to earth “30 Second Wine Advisor”), Hoke (he writes so eloquently you’ll be on cloud nine sipping and tasting the wine with him), Tom Hill (you’ll get “short and boring”, weird repetitious TN maybe a “Bloody Pulpit”), Gary Vaynerchuk (you’ll get his version of a “Sniffy-sniff and a whirl”), and lastly our own JB (you’ll get the “sexiest” TN ever).

I agree with Victor. I would choose judges from WLDG. Otto, Anders, Peter May, Robin, Hoke, David, Jenise, those guys from Manila, ...

That would make for a very interesting but inconsequential tasting.
